  1. Local Marriage Customs
    Shrove is the time of the year between Christmas and Lent and it is the principal time for marriages in this district. Marriage taking place in June the month of the Roses are considered very lucky. May marriages are considered very unlucky.
    There are also superstitions about the days of the week.
    Monday for health,
    Tuesday for wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for crosses,
    Friday for losses,
    and Saturday no luck at all.
    Most brides believe in being dressed in blue on the marriage day. "Something old and something new something borrowed and something blue".
    Very few men marry a lady if she has not a fortune. It is nearly always money that
