  1. Potatoes are sown in drills. Wooden ploughs are still to be seen, but are not used.
When the potatoes come up, the plough is run through the furrow & clay put to the stalks.
In the Autumn, the plough is run through the drills & all the members of the household go out to pick the potatoes, which are stored in pits, a part of the ground hollowed out to a depth of about half a foot & into which the potatoes are put.
The potatoes which grow best in this district are Leinster Wonders, British Queens & Shamrocks.

  2. About ¾ of an acre is under potatoes on our farm. They are sown in drills.
At first, the ground is ploughed & well harrowed & then rolled, after which it is 'drilled' by means of a plough.
When the potatoes are over-ground, they must be well hoed & scuffled. Three weeks after they appear, they must be "earthed".
The potatoes are dug by means of a plough, which divids the drill in two & exposes the crop which is picked into baskets by those employed for the purpose.
