- My father & brother prepare the ground. They never put manure in the ground before turning it up.
In drills, the potatoes are sown. When the drills are being made, the ground is ploughed & then harrowed & drills open. Manure is put in the trenches. Seed-potatoes are put on top of the manure & the drills closed by means of a plough. The farmer's wife cuts the seed for the farmer, but she leaves and "eye" in each bit.
Sometimes, the neighbours help one another by lending horses or by lending ploughs or by laying the seed.
In the summer months, when the potatoes are up over-ground, the farmer put clay to them.
When dug, the potatoes are stored in pits. A pit is made of rushes underneath & hay, rushes & bushes on top.
Champions, British Queens, Irish Queens, Shamrocks & Ker-pinks are the names of the potatoes grown in this district.- Bailitheoir
