- The root of the dock is boiled & the juice drunk to cure the Kidneys. Thistles were used as food by people. Some use nettles instead of cabbage while others give them to turkeys. The "Devil's Bit" was so good for curing people that the devil came & bit a part of it off. Hence the name.
