    There was a hedge school in Michael Doherty's field Moulerstown. It was attended by pupils from the district around and their teacher was an old soldier. The pupils from far away slept in Doherty's barn and some of them were great scholars.

    There was a hedge school in Martin Phelan's field in Ballyfacy. The teaching was held in a barn. The teachers name was Patrick Butler. The teacher got his meals in a different boy's house every day. He generally slept at Mullins in Tlemingstown. The pupils gave the teacher a few pecnce every week. There were about fifty pupils attending school.
