    The domestic animals are as follows:- the cow, ass, horse, pig, cat, dog, and goat. Some cows have got names such as, "the Polly, the Magpie, the Blackie and the Speckler" The cowhouse is called a byre, and it is very big. There are five cows tied on one side and the same amount on the other side. In the middle is a narrow channel. The cows are practically always tied to stakes, and with either home-made ropes or chains. Locally, Saint Brigid's cross is hung in the byre to bring luck on the stock.
