There it was we lost young Ava
Chief of all our gallant train
Can the wealth of Transval diamonds
Bring to us his like again.
    Lord console his weeping mother
As she sorrows for her son.
    And paint before us vividly
    His deeds of valour done.
He a martyr to his duty
Gave his life in youthful bloom.
And for sake of Britain's honour
Now he sleeps within the tomb
    Let his name become immortal
Who in battle was so brave
Leave his dust in quiet slumber
    In an honoured soldiers grave
