    Then we gained a little respite
    In the interval between
    Ill attempt to bring before you
    A description of the scene.
    Far behind us boomed our cannons.
    Whilst before save cruel foe.
    All around groaned dying soldiers
    As their weary eyes they close.
    Once again the foe attack us
    Once again we drove them back
    Firm the British soldiers rallied
    Round the dear old Union Jack.
    Thunder loudly peeled above us
    Lightning flashed with brilliant glow.
    Till above us heavens artillery
    Vies with earth's batteries below.
    So when ordered charged with bayonets
    We went to it with our will
    And like deaths destroying angel
    Swept the foe-men from the hill.
