  1. Before the people knew how to harness horse they made them draw by the tail.
    Houses were made of mud & had a box for chimney.
    They baked oat bread on grid irons placed before the fire.
    They made wisps of candles from rushes melted sugar and resin.
    Where James Lappin lives in Alkill there was a school. The teacher's name was Donal Lappin.
    The people used to make brushes from heather which they tied up with bark of briars.
    They put mint & nettles in soup.
    The old people had no knives & they peeled potatoes with their thumbs.
    The noggin was used for supping porridge. It was bigger than a pint tin & of wood & had two handles.
    The potatoes were emptied out on a draining basket & the people sat around to eat. Samains were made sometimes for supper. Oatmeal seed steeped in water and an iron spoon was left in it to make it sour. It was strained through clean linen cloth & the liquid was kept boiling & stirred until thick
