- Mike Kelly, a poet lived in Middletown. Niall Doran was also a poet. He wrote a poem about a hunt in Clontibret and one about a bonfire.
Kelly wrote following poem about a game cock owned by Arthur Ban (Millar) of Bondville below Middletown. One morning John Holland was going to his work
When going to his work he heard Bond’s cock crow
And as he did crow, the words he did say
Draw near sons of Gráinne and take me away.
I was took from my walk in the dead of night
And brought here to Bondville my friends for to fight
