  1. Once upon a time there was an old step-mother who was very cruel to her two step-children. They were very poor. So one day she said to their father. "We won't be able to provide food for these children. We should kill them." To this the father replied that he would do no such a thing. Then the stepmother made up her mind to bring them to a wood and abandon them.
One day she told the children that they were going to the wood to gather kippins for the fire. When they had collected some fire stuff she told them to light a fire for themselves and that she had to go a journey but would be back again before night.
When evening came the stepmother failed to turn up. The two children began to cry but they fell asleep.
