- The local fairs are held in Ballymote in the first Tuesday and Wednesday of the month. The pigs and bonhams are sold on Tuesday and cattle, sheep, horses and asses in Wednesday. There is not much selling or buying now at cross-roads. However, during the past two years or so pigs weighing over twelve stone are weighed at Mr. Rogers in Ballymote, and then their price is calculated at the current fixed prices for the different grades. This happens every Monday and the pigs are sent by rail to Sligo where a branch of the famous Denny & Co. has been established.
Consequently, less trade is now transacted at the pig fair in Ballymote as farmers from within a wide radius of Ballymote dispose of their pigs as stated above.
The selling and buying takes place to a great extent in the streets, a practice which the tours-people strongly object and the Garda(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
