  1. Long ago in the Famine times the people of this district suffered terribly with hunger. The potato crop failed and the people had nothing to depend on for food except on the oats which they took to the mill where it was ground into oaten meal.
    From this they made porridge which they ate with milk and this was the only food they had.
    An old woman of this locality often related the following story to her neighbours.
    In the famine times a man had some seed potatoes and he scattered them on a clean, dry floor lest they should decay.
