One of the punishments was hoisting and it was a punishment they did not like at all. One of the punishments was also the leather badge.
One story about the hoisting is. One day about seventy six years ago Dan Quirke and another comrade were going to school one day and they were late. they knew they were late so they said that they would go into Cleary's old house and stay there until they would be going in from play.
The went in and when the misses was passing up she saw them and she told the master. When they went up the master went "hoisting" them. He had a hard job to put the other fellow crying but Dan cried the first slap.
