The country loved him well.

None could him excel.
VImprovements in this diocese,
In buildings he has made,
Even the Cathedral
Where now his body lays.
But now alas! he's gone from us
His loss we do deplore
For in Killala's diocese
We'll never see him more.
VIWhen in the town of Ballina
The mournful news was spread.
The shops were closed,
And business stopped,
In honour of the dead.
Because he was so amicable,
So generous and kind
A true friend of the orphan;
The cripple and the blind.
