Long ago there was a house in Hayestown, at Walshe's and 'twas a great card school.
They used often play all night there.
This Saturday night anyway they said they'd break up early. They had only a short bit of a candle and they said they'd only play while the bit of a candle would last. They played away and the but of a candle held all night and they all missed Mass next day. There was never a card played in that house ever after.
Cards - They say that the devil broke all the people up in Ould Ross wan time.
'Twas the hunting season, and 'twas an awful time of drinking, and gambling, and carousing. This strange gentleman was with them all the time and he was after winning what they had.
Wan night they were playing, a card happened to fall and when they stooped to pick it up they saw the clover foot of the lad. They had to send for the priest to run him out of the place.
