The story of the picture is as follows:- Long ago there lived an illustrious Chinese Mandarin, who had a beautiful daughter named Li-Chi. He had her up in the garden because he intended to get her married to some noble. Finally, she fell in love with the gardener. They both ran bringing with them a box of jewels so that they might live in comfort. The Mandarin saw them and pursued them with a whip.
