  1. All the houses were thatched long ago.
    The roofs were made of timber and sods, and more were thatched with rushes.
    There was a bed in the kitchen and it was called a settle-bed, and it was along the wall.
    The fire was not always at the gable wall, in some of the old houses the fire was at the gable wall.
    There was some houses with a chimney made of wood and it was made in the shape of a box.
    And on other houses the chimney was made of clay and wattles. There were a few houses that had no chimneys but there were a few.
    Netted-wire was used instead of glass, the wire was nailed up against the window. The floor was made of clay.
    Some people have half-doors yet.
    Sticks and sods were burned long ago. Bog deal were used sometimes as a light but dipped candles were used more often.
