   Buying and Selling

   Long ago shops were not common, in this district. The people had to go to the nearest towns to make purchases. Buying and selling is carried on after Mass. There is a small little hut beside the road in which papers, tobacco, cigarettes and matches are sold, and people going from Mass go in to buy. This little hut is only opened on a Sunday, as the owner has a large shop also.

   Money is not always given for goods. The people bring eggs, butter or home knitted socks to the shop and they receive the worth of them of goods. Sometimes labour is given in exchange for goods.

   The words connected with buying and selling are "tick" and "cant". When people get goods in a shop and do not pay for them when got they get them on "tick". People who sell articles out on the street on fair days at half price are called "cant" men.

   Long ago there was a market held in Blacklion for butter and eggs. The pig market was held in Swanlinbar. The Blacklion market is done away with this last few years. The border is supposed to be the cause of its failure. There are accounts of pedlars and dealers in feathers and rags who visited the district. About two years ago there came a man to the locality for feathers and rags. Pedlars visit the shops selling
