  1. Travellers still visit this district. Some of them are poor and others are not so poor. Many of them have carts and others walk. These are the names of the travelling people, Nevin, Joyce, O'Leary, Power &c. They ask for bread, flour, eggs, butter, etc. Sometimes they do not get what they ask for. A lot of people give them lodging at night. They bring in an armful of straw and sleep on it in the kitchen. I never knew of a tinker to get lodging in our house. They come before the races in Kilkenny West, and also before a fair in Athlone.
Gypsies also visit this district. They have dark hair and brown skin. They sell carpets, rugs, linoleum, &c. The women gyypsies tell fortunes to those who are foolish enough to give them money.
