- An Old Custom
On St John's Eve, in this district long ago the people used light fires up on the hills. When the fire was lighted they all assembled around it, and remained there till it was burned down. Then they drove their cattle through the remains of the fire: As they said that this would keep sickness from the cattle for the year. They then took one of the burned sticks that remained after the fire, and made the Sign of the Cross on the crops, to keep the blight from them, and to yield good fruit.
