My grandmother,- my Mother's mother - lived at a place called Knockballintra, near the Knockmealdown Mountains. She could not speak any word of English but all Irish. My mother who also speaks Irish ( and English ) told me the following: - how they used make candles long ago at her home. They got ready a pot of very hot water and melted fat , of animals in it. They then got a fine cord and twisted fat around the cord in the shape of a candle and dipped them again in the hot water, and smoothed the fat with the hand. Then they hung them up and left them to dry and get hard. Then they were ready for use.- Faisnéiseoir
