- The potatoe cropPotatoes are grown on our land. We have about half an acre of land under potatoes.
While the field is still green manure is spread on it, then the two sods are ploughed, after that the mould is ploughed and put into the ridges. Holes are bored in them and the splits dropped into the holes. The holes are closed by beating them with sticks.Long ago people used wooden ploughs which they made at home. The spades are bought in a shop. The seed potatoes are cut into "splits". If people have to set potatoes that have just been cut they put turf mould on them to dry them.The local people help one another when sowing the potatoes.When the potatoes are coming up artifical manure is put on them, then they are moulded. In June the potatoes are sprayed with a mixture they are dug out and put in heaps in the field, later they are removed to the barn.The potatoes grown locally are Kerpinks, Epicures, Aranbanners and Aranvictors.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
