- Up till about twenty years ago the flail was used in this district by every farmer for the purpose of threshing oats. Nowadays, it is very rarely used by the farmers of this locality as the threshing machine has taken its place. The flail consists of two sticks of strong wood, each about four feet long, joined loosely together end to end by a strong twine. The stick which is held in the hand is called the "Colpán" and the other stick is called the "Buailteán." Threshing is very severe work and old people still tell how hard they used to work in their younger days. A man would thresh a stack of oats in a day. The kitchen was used as a barn on threshing day.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
