About one hundred years ago there was a "hedge school" in Mr. Bartley's land in the townland of Urcher, it was held out in the open under hedges, there was a master named Mr. William Grey of Urcher who taught the pupils, he was a local man, he also carried on school in farmer's houses, the farmers in their turn kept the teacher, he got no pay for teaching except his keep.
