The subjects taught in this school were Arithmetic Reading, Geography and Writing. Irish was not taught. The school was carried on from nightfall to midnight and the only light available was a wick light.
Some of the ruins of this old school are still to be seen and are well known to the people of the neighbourhood. The field in which the school was built is known as The "Scolg Field," and is in the possession of the O'Sullivan family since 1822 down to the present day. - This school was held in a room in Denis Coleman's house in Meenygrogeen Banteer between Tady Taffe's farm house and Herlihy's Public House. Denis Coleman was a poor man and had a small house as the "schoolroom was very small and had only one window.
