  1. Up to about 1880 men always worked until 8.30 AM without food. They had breakfast consisting of potatoes and skim milk. The more well - to - do used butter or eggs with the potatoes.
    Home made wheaten bread, Potato bread, yellow meal bread and oatmeal bread baked standing before the fire were also used.
    The farmers always killed a cow at Christmas, and salted the meat. The head was given to the local smith always, in payment. A set of horse-shoes cost 1/- then If you brought your own iron they cost 8d
    A labourer got 2/- a day up to St Patricks day then 2/6 a day for redigging.
