- There was a widow who had a son named Jack.
She threw out some beans and one bean stalk grew up and up till it reached the sky. Jack said one day that he would climb the beanstalk and see what was in the sky.
So he went up the beanstalk and he saw a house there and he went in and saw no one except an old woman there (was) and he asked for lodging. The woman said there was a giant living there and if he knew she kept anyone he would kill her. Jack said if she would give him something to eat he would lie and hide among the bones and rags in the corner. When the giant came home he said "Him, ham, I find the smell of an Irishman." The woman said, "It is a dead crow that fell down the chimney and is burning in the fire. The (giant) giant took a hen from under his coat and put her on the floor.
