- There was a famine in Ireland in the year 1847. In that year there came a failure on the potatoes and they did not grow that year and the people nearly died that year.
The people that were working on roads that time were badly paid. They had only four pence a day and they had to support themselves. A lot of people were driven out of their homes at that time by landlords. For they were not able to pay the rent for their land. Some people died of starvation while at their work during the famine times.
