  1. Mark Lucey of Rathoura, an old man of 90 years tells me that just before his day Sullivan a Kerry poet often visited this area. He was held in great respect and the songs he made were much prized. The old people of his day spoke affectionately of him, and sang the songs he composed. Those he remembers are "famed Gubbeen Shore" (at page 61), The Phoenix of the Hall." The "Rakes of Saint Giles", "Kathleen Trial", [?] and a song about Napoleon which he has forgotten.
    The Phoenix of the Hall.
    One day for recreation
    In silent meditation
    Near a sweet plantation
    I carelessly did stray
    Where Flora's decorations
    Enriched each situation
    A rural habitation
(For the Phoenix of the Hall)
    That lay along the way.
    Being rapt in contemplation
    And viewing the creation
    Its grand illustration
    I thought for to extol.
    When to my admiration
