- Shops were common long ago but not so numerous as at present. The people had to go to the nearest town to get goods. They people sold things & brought things after mass. This is still done. The markets were held in the towns & still are. A shilling was called 'a bob' & a sixpence 'a tanner'.Goods were bartered in the district & sometimes labour was given in exchange. They used the word 'Boot' for buying & selling.Hucksters, pedlars & feather dealers came round & come sometines yet. A penny was called "a make".
