  1. Marriages take place locally within a month before Shrove. Tuesday's and Friday's are said to be unlucky days for marriage. An old saying is Happy is the bride that the sun shines, on, which means a marriage celebrated on a sunny day. Matches are made in the district. The bride's parents generally give money as a dowry. Long ago some marriages took place in the house and in the evenings young men on horse-back from the bride's house, to the groom's house, the winner of the race getting a bottle of whiskey. This was about fifty years ago. A wedding feast is different nowadays. the marriage takes place in the morning in the church. The newly-married and their friends return to the bride's home where the marriage festivities take place until evening, then all return to the groom's house where further celebrations are held.
