- Shops were not so common in olden times. Shops are common at present. People had not to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying or Selling was not carried on after Mass. Money was not always given for goods. Labour was sometimes given for goods. It was considered unlucky to transact business on Sundays in olden times. Markets were held in the towns and villages in olden times. In olden times hucksters, pedlars, and dealers dressed in rags visited the district. The four penny piece is gone out of use. In olden times a shilling was called a bob, a sixpence was called a kid's eye and a pound was called a quid. The four and five shilling pieces are gone out of use.
