  1. A belief prevalent in this district among the old people was that human beings were brought away by the fairies. About one hundred years ago, there lived in the townland of Carriga a man named Smith. One evening just after sunset, his wife went up to the fort near the house to milk the cows. This fort in the townland of Carriga is in close proximity to the house where Mr John McEntee lives at the present time. Smith despaired of his wife's return, went up to the fort and found her lying dead there. The corpse was brought home and was in due time interred.
    After some time Smith re-married and then his first wife, whom he believed to be dead, appeared to him and informed him that she was still living and that she had been taken away by the fairies who had their place of abode in the fort. She also told him that he could get her back from the fairies if he did what she asked him
