The people used to crown in thousands around the convent. The nuns were unable to keep the badges handed out, so they had to begin to fold them in paper and pass them out through the windows. It was supposed that about three thousand in Tullamore and a hundred in Ballydaly died of the disease. Any family where the disease broke out were almost left desolate.

   And then, about a year later, another disease called "black fever" broke out. Times were very bad then and people were unable to get nourishment. People affected would lie speechless, and the other inhabitants of the house were not allowed to live within. They had to take outhouses and they were not allowed even to cook food. People almost died with hunger. There were often cases known where four and five were waked in one house. There were a number of people who
