Le Gros and Basilica sister of Strongbow were the first persons of English birth to be married within its walls.
In 1463 it was used as a Parliament House by the Earl of Desmond, and laws were made which referred to the repair of the castle walls. Cromwell when sacking Wexford in 1463 demolished the Abbey, and took the fine peal of bells from the tower, and sent them to Chester. They were then transferred to a church in Liverpool where they are to this day. Tradition says that in lieu of the bells the freemen of Wexford received the freedom of Liverpool, and exemption from the dues of that port.
The walls of the tower are six to eight feet thick. A spiral staircase leads to the summit through a doorway four feet high. It is a very difficult climb and still more difficult descent. No dates earlier than 1600 are to be seen in the graveyard. The new church of the unrestored part has three Gothic arches and two gables. One of these gables has a broad Saxon arch.
