  1. The old houses long ago were thatched, mud-walled houses. They had three rooms the kitchen in the middle and a bedroom on each side. The houses were thatched with straw and rushes. The straw was got from oats and the rushes were got in the fields. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen and it was called a settle-bed. The fireplace in the kitchen was in the gable wall. There were two chimneys on them.
The thatched houses were more comfortable. Because in the summer they were not too hot and in the winter they were very warm and cosy.
The houses long ago had very small windows and half-doors . They used to burn turf and sticks and sometimes birch. They used to use rush-candles as a light and they used to make them from bull-rushes.
