- Long ago the people in this parish used to make rush candles. They cut the rushes and put them beside the fire for three or four days. When they were dry they took the outer skin off them. The dipped them in grease and left it to dry into them. When they were dry they were ready to be lighted. The old people used no other light but rush-candles.
