    An old man named HOugh who spent his life as cooachman in the service of the Palmer family who lived at Clonlost house died during the snow-storm. The Sergeant with two other Guards and another man left Killucan with the coffin and it took them four hours to do the journey which in ordinary ties takes about twenty minutes. The funeral could not take place for a week as the roads and fields were impassible.
    The snow remained on the school road between the two crossroads for a month. It was five feet deep in some places in this locality. The windows were covered with snow on the out side and people had to light lamps and candles during the day. Birds died in dozens in the woods and by the road-sides.
