  2. Shrove Tuesday (or Pancake Night)
Long ago on Shrove Tuesday night some people used to fill three bottles with water and place them outside on the windowsill. It was thought that bachelors who had died would come back and drink the water. In the morning the bottles were usually empty. Then the people of the house would go out to see if any of their property, such as barrows, wheels or gates were gone, and if they were they blamed the bachelors. It was said that one bachelor would steal from the other and leave it with the people he left behind him.
