- St James is the Patron Saint of Cooley and his feast-day the 26th July is kept as a general holiday throughout the district. In olden times it was observed as a holiday of obligation but now the former custom of abstaining from servile work is not rigidly adhered to.There is a well situated near Greenore known as Saint James's Well and each year on the 25th July the Saints feast-day a pilgrimage takes place to this Well where Rosary is recited and afterwards Benedicton given in honour of the Saint.After all the prayers are said each pilgrim takes a bottle of water from the running well and a a little stone from the bottom. They keep these in their houses and rub or bathe their sores with them thus showing their faith (in the) powerful intercession of Saint James.Long ago the old people had implisit faith in the healing powers of the waters. They bathed their sores and rubbed the water to their seat of pain and prayed to the great Saint James to cure them. Many cures were wrought I believe(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
