- The Blockhouse is an old ruin situated on an island at the entrance to Carlingford Lough quite convenient to the County Down coast and about three miles from Greenore. It was built as a fortess during the Norman Invasion and in the famine years it was used as a hospital. At present it is roofless and only a home for wild sea fowl.
One of the fiercest battles fought during the Norman Invasion was at this old spot. Some old Irish families were besieged here during that Invasion but they escaped by getting through a submarine channel which led to Greencastle on the County Down coast.
The English besieged the place later and got possession and used it as a garrison station placing a govenor and many soldiers there. A strange pirate ship came into the Lough one day and the captain sent two of his men to see if the building was inhabited.
