    Flogging of the Bláths (Pr. Blách's) of Golden:-
    A family of Sullivans known as Bláth's lived in Golden, were of a hardy nature + men of wonderful stamina + endurance.
    Some information was given of them to Sir John + he had them flogged on the fairgreen of Golden
    One of them was called Jancey the poet + for every lash of the cat he shouted in defiance:-
    "Here's blách + Blossom + where's the harm"
    When the flogging was over he rolled himself in a clump of nettles. He was then salted by the floggers.
    This man lived a long + useful life afterwards. Nobody of his stock now lives in Golden + I'm sure few of his indomitable courage.

    Sir John Becomes Poor:
    Apparently Sir John did not always occupy the position of Sheriff because towards the end of his life he was very poor. It is told of him that he was refused a 1 1/2d cut o tobacco by a man called John Murry of Ballygriffin who owned a small shop.
