- The most harmful weeds growing on our farm are thistles, tansy, spunk, robin-run-the-hedge and scutch-grass.
Thistles are harmful because they spread rapidly. Tansy is also a weed which spreds very quickly and causes much damage. Spunk is very harmful because it is difficult to banish it out of land. Robin-run-the-hedge spreads over the hedges and destroys them. Scutch-grass is harmful because it impoverises the soil. Thistles are looked upon as growing only where land is good. Large white daisies are said to grow only where soil is poor. There is a certain weed called "cat's-eye" which cures yellow-jaundice. The weed is boiled and the person suffering from the jaundice drinks the juice.- Faisnéiseoir
