  1. Jim Mulqueen - The Poet.
We forgot to mention Jim Mulqueen, of Newtown, used
"to slip dogs" at the big coursing meetings. He was the slipper at Clounanna coursing several times. His brother Tom was another slipper. One night Jim came home from a coursing meeting. He told all the boys that he had a great day, but the old trouble was there, the sisters wouldn't let him get married. One of the lads said, "We should have a marriage market".
Next day Jim appeared having made a new poem called.
    The Marriage Market.
We're to have a marriage market.
on the top of Newtown hill.
Where every man can find a wife.
If he has got the will.
'Tis a government proposal, and we wish to make it clear.
That no busy Priest or Parson, shall dare to interfere.
The sales will be conducted by Batt Fin and Tom Mulqueen.
