In Ballypokeen, (townland in Rockhill parish D. OC.) I haven't master's name but he had a salary of £10, a stone school which cost £100 (!?), and 71 Catholic pupils.
Besides the above whose names appear in a Blue Book on schools issued in 1837 I have got from the neighbours the names of the following.
- Dalton taught in Croom in a school near the present Guards' Barrack.
- Jordan taught in a thatched house near Carrigeen Cross between O'Neills and Griffin's on the other side of the road.
-Gleeson went from house to house teaching. The two latter known as "hedge masters."
Paddy Cusick also taught.
