Many of these people delight in telling ghost stories and all they met and saw at night. There are few tell tales of famine times, the most notable being an old hospital where patients were kept during the famine. The town itself is mentioned in the songs in the "Sweet River Deel".
    From a place called Askeaton,
    So charming to see,
    Come greetings from home
    Fond greetings to me,
    There's a beautiful castle
    Those structures, as fine,
As is seen in our land.
The land around is a limestone plain, with a few woods here and there. The biggest being Castlehenson wood with Stewich joining it. Both woods cover between forty and fifty acres. Askeaton is built on the river Deel, and there are few large streams flowing into it, the biggest being the mill-stream. This stream turns the mill-wheel at the creamery.
