  1. Severe Weather
    Most heavy storms occur about the month of October exclusive of snow storms which generally begin on or after Christmas and most christmas cards depict a snow storm scene.
    About the first of November 1911 a very severe frost was witnessed in the district which lasted about two months with the result that many animals and most of the wild birds died of starvation, the latter not being able to peck out the grubs from the soil on account of its crispness. Vehicular traffic was much suspended as the animals could not travel and pedestrians found it ever so difficult to reach or pursue their daily occupations. A thaw set in after Christmas and then the whole country side was inundated with water.
    There are always portents of the approach of bad weather, for instance, when a fall of snow is nigh the sheep leave the feeding grounds and on the hills and come to the lowlands for shelter, a coppery or yellow sunset generally foretells rain, the flight of wild geese tells of unsettled weather, the clouds passing quickly overhead indicate a wind storm and a crimson colour sky at sun
