  1. About fifty or sixty years ago there lived a strong man named Seán Burns in the townland of Buagh. My grandfather knew him well and he told me that he saw Seán Burns to carry a cow across the Feale. Sean put a rope under her body and slung her up on his shoulder and carried her in that position across the Feale River.
    As Seán was coming home from Listowel one day, a boy said something insulting to Sean's sister who was with him. Seán gave that boy a tip of a rod he had in his hand and killed him instantly. Then Seán had to go out on his keeping into the County Tipperary.
    Seán went to a smith's forge one day and while the smith turned to his fire to get a piece of iron he had in it Sean took an anvil with one hand and put it behind his back and when the smith turned again to the fire he took the second anvil in his other hand and put it behind his back. A man in the forge said no man could do that but Seán Burns.
    Sean was often mixed up in a row at fairs in Newcastle but the police never attempted
