almost destroyed by people looking for gold and others making graves. It is said many years ago a road contractor was repairing roads near Kildorrery and he used to take the stones from the ruin in the graveyard.
One of the villagers told him not to take anymore stones from the ruins. The contractor did so. In the course of his work he took a large stone which the villager told him to bring back. He brought it back and he put it in the northern wall where it can still be seen.
The village was called Kildorrery or Cíll Dairbre, because long ago before the district was converted into an agricultural area, a large forest of oak covered the district around. Then the old church already mentioned Hence it derived its name Cíll Dairbre "The church of the oaks".
